Action Economy

Action Economy

Actions represent the different things you can do during an encounter while the type of action dictates how long it typically takes to perform said action.

During each round of an encounter, a character may typically perform a standard action, a move action, a minor action and a reaction as well as any number of free actions.

Some situations may limit which actions a creature may take in a round and some feats, magic items or other circumstances may grant additional actions.

Standard Action

Standard Actions are the most common actions and cover most major combat actions such as most Techniques (including the ubiquitous Basic Strike), Spells, and using most abilities. See the table below for other examples of Standard Actions.

Move Action

Move Actions are typically used to spend movement speed (see Movement). See the table below for other examples of Move Actions.

A creature can use a Move Action in place of a Standard Action.

Minor

Minor Actions are typically swift but meaningful. Many Minor Actions include such things as using items or skills as well as quick-cast spells. See the table below for other examples of Minor Actions.

Reaction

Reactions allow creatures to act in response to another creature’s action or other occurrence in the heat of combat. Each character normally has a single Reaction they may use each turn. Types of reactions include attacks of opportunity, parrying, shield blocking, and certain spells. See the table below for other examples of Reactions.

Triggers

Some Reactions will note that they are triggered by a specific event such as an enemy dealing damage to the user or allies within a specific range, an ally’s actions, or even an action the character themselves are taking. If a Reaction says it is triggered by something, it cannot be used until the triggering action occurs and must be used as soon as such an action occurs.

Free Action

Free actions are those that require very little time or effort and or can be performed at the same time as other actions. These include normal speech, dropping items and usages of certain items. Typically, free actions are unlimited, but certain specific free actions may be limited ot once per turn or encounter.
